What is Centering Prayer?

Centering prayer is a contemplative Christian practice that opens you to God's presence beyond thoughts, words, and emotions. Rooted in the ancient tradition of the Desert Fathers and refined by Fr. Thomas Keating, it is a prayer of consent — saying “yes” to God's action within you.

Unlike other forms of prayer that use words or images, centering prayer invites you to simply rest. You choose a sacred word — like “Jesus,” “Peace,” or “Love” — as a symbol of your intention. When thoughts arise, you gently return to the word. Over time, the practice deepens your relationship with God in a way that transforms daily life.

Practiced regularly, centering prayer reduces anxiety, cultivates inner peace, and helps you hear God's still, small voice — even in the chaos of modern life.

How Centering Prayer Works

1

Choose a Sacred Word

Select a word that symbolizes your intention to consent to God's presence. Words like 'Jesus,' 'Peace,' 'Love,' or 'Grace' work well. The app suggests options to help you get started.

2

Settle into Silence

Sit comfortably with eyes closed. Take a few deep breaths. A gentle bell marks the beginning. Introduce the sacred word silently as the symbol of your consent.

3

Return Gently When Distracted

When thoughts arise — and they will — return ever-so-gently to the sacred word. This is not about emptying your mind. It is about returning to your intention to be with God.

4

Rest for 20 Minutes

Continue for the duration of your session. The app keeps time for you with a gentle bell at the end. Remain in silence for 2 more minutes before slowly opening your eyes.

Benefits of Regular Practice

Deeper Peace

Experience a calm that extends beyond your prayer time into daily life.

Scriptural Roots

Grounded in Jesus's invitation to 'go into your room, close the door, and pray' (Matthew 6:6).

Just 20 Minutes

A practice that fits any schedule. Start with 10 minutes and grow from there.

“I was skeptical about centering prayer, but Streams of Grace made it so approachable. The guided timer and gentle bells keep me on track. After three weeks, I noticed a real difference in how I handle stress.”
